Monday, March 18:
President's Day. No School.
Tuesday, March 19:
Introduce U6P1 words with a pretest; grade together.
Return outlines that were submitted early. Discuss common problems demonstrated so far. In response, today's objectives will focus on understanding how to correctly prepare/organize an outline.
Put students into 6 groups with a "Research buddy/leader". These "Research buddies/leaders" were students who submitted an outline and demonstrated mastery understanding of the skill and format necessary for the assignment. All other students will be separated into a group where there is at least one Research buddy to use as guidance/reference.
Groups will receive an envelope with 32 practice note cards including a thesis (subtopics: cats, dogs, and benefits to having a pet).
In groups, students will arrange the note cards as taught in class, as preparation for an outline.
By the end of today, groups should have the following complete:
properly identify the thesis and subtopics. Determine the order in which the subtopics should be presented in the outline, based on their order in the thesis statement. Determine how many different headings you have, and how many subtopics there should be for a 5-paragraph essay.
Organize all note cards into groups by heading. Analyze if there are enough for a 5-paragraph essay, and what each paragraph will be about, according to these headings.
Analyze any "extra" note cards to determine where or if they can be used. (Excellent "real-life" situation that students may encounter with their own note cards!)
Arrange note cards in logical order, and number them on the backside 1-32 (or however many note cards the group decides are useful.)
HW: Organize your own note cards in the same way--by heading, then by logical order.
Wednesday, March 20:
Continue to meet/work with groups from yesterday.
By the end of today: groups should have the following complete:
Carefully analyze each note card (already placed in a logical and now chronological order from yesterday) to determine what the Roman Numeral Subtopics will be named, Capital lettered Headings will be, and how the other information will be presented in an outline (Numbers, or lower case letters)
"Plug-in" the information into a proper outline using MLA format described and instructed in Research folder (I, A, 1, a, i, etc.)
Present information to the class, and discuss accuracy and effectiveness of outline.
HW: Apply today's practice to your own note cards & outline--prepare and determine which information will be a Roman numeral, capital letter, etc.
Thursday, March 21:
Check U6P1 word wisdom workbook pages with a student leader
Begin/Continue creating your own outline, properly following guidelines and all requirements.
Every Roman Numeral should say:
I. "Intro"
II. [your first subtopic from your thesis]
III. [your second subtopic from your thesis]
IV. [your third subtopic from your thesis]
V. "Conclusion"
Every Roman Numeral will be broken down into A, B, C, D at minimum.
All "A"s will say "Hook" (intro only) or "Topic Sentence".
All "D"s (or whatever your last Capital letter is, will say "Thesis" (intro only) or "Concluding Sentence"
All Capital letters (except for A and your last letter) will be broken down into AT LEAST #1 and #2
